Wolfskin

A mini-interview with Jeremy Szal

Tell us about your new book?

Wolfskin is the third and final book in the Common Saga. What started as two brothers on opposite sides of a drug war has escalated into an interstellar, galactic conflict. Involved in this war are space cults, nomadic space-faring warriors, ancient alien empires, dozens of species and thousands of ships and millions of souls, as the fight for the very soul of the galaxy is determined.

And yet, there is still a tight focus on the core of the story, which is the relationship between characters, between brothers, and what it means to be a man of violence, while still possessing the capacity for love, and allowing yourself to be loved.

What aspect of the book was the most fun to write?

There’s a big duel sequence in the middle of the book. It took a great amount of orchestrating, not like a Rube Goldberg machine, but once all the positions and people were in play, seeing everything fall into place just the way I wanted…it was delightful. Such a delight.

If there is one emotion or theme that you would hope that the reader connects with, what would that be?

I want the reader to experience the love and loss and hope and heartbreak that these characters feel. I often say to readers when asked about this, “I will break you, but I’ll put you back together again.” I won’t say what exact feeling you’ll experience, coming out of Wolfskin, or what fate will befall each character…but I hope that it hits you, and hits hard.
