Jean-Paul L. Garnier is the owner of Space Cowboy Books bookstore and publishing house, producer of Simultaneous Times Podcast (2023 Laureate Award Winner, BSFA, Ignyte, and British Fantasy Award Finalist, and has been longlisted for the Hugo Award 3 times). He is the editor of the SFPA’s Star*Line magazine. and deputy editor-in-chief of Worlds of IF & Galaxy magazines. He has also guest edited for Eldritch Science Magazine. In 2024 he won the Laureate Award for Best Editor and for Best Anthology (Simultaneous Times Vol.3), which also won the 2024 Next Generation Indie Book Award and the Critters Readers Poll. In 2023 he also won the Laureate Award for Best Fanzine (Simultaneous Times Newsletter). He is the host of many author events as well as the acclaimed Flash Science Fiction Nights reading series. He is the author of many books of poetry and science fiction and has been the recipient of the Arts Connection Arts Innovator Grant and the James Patterson Holiday Bonus. His work has also been nominated for the Elgin, Rhysling, and Dwarf Stars Awards. Garnier has also served as a juror for the Speculative Literature Foundation and the Omega SF Awards.
Garnier has entries in both the Science Fiction Encyclopedia and the Internet Speculative Fiction Database.
He is also a full member of the Science Fiction Writers Association, a member of the British Science Fiction Association, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association, the American Booksellers Association, and a member of the Directorate of the National Fantasy Fan Foundation.
Garnier’s non-fiction, fiction, and poetry have appeared in: Dark Matter Magazine, Vector, Utopia Science Fiction, Dream Foundry, Starlite Pulp, Emanations, Luna Arcana, CMC’s Howl, Samjoko Magazine, Radon Journal, P.O. Garnier has guest lectured, been a featured reader and presenter at: Pride on the Page, Moore College of Art and Design, CalState LA, College of the Desert, Copper Mountain College, Story Hour, Speculative Poetry Sundays, Flights of Foundry, LosCon, Litfest in the Dena, the Bijou Theater, 29 Palms Festival of Books, bookstores and libraries all around California and Arizona, and much more.
Space Cowboy Books has received the SFWA’s Givers Grant four years in a row, as well as the Critters Readers Poll for Best Bookstore in 2021, 2022, and 2023, the Nextdoor Neighborhood Fave for 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024, the Allevents Making the World Happen Award, and Alta Magazine’s Favorite Bookstore in 2022. The bookstore also created the annual Working Class Writers Scholarship for Odyssey Workshop and provides an annual scholarship for Clarion.
