Novic

A mini-interview with Eugen Bacon

Tell us about your new book?

What if you were trapped in a cycle of dying, repeat—would you do anything to understand it? Meet Novic, who camels to the mountains, to the Temple of Kripps in the Land of Praeyer at a place below zero in a hope that a female monk named Brad might give him answers. A story warped in beauty and gore, interspersed with poetic vignettes—what about Novic?

NOVIC is a novelette that I wrote to explore deeper a character who fascinated me in my very first novel, Claiming T-Mo. The novelette is stand-alone—you don’t need to know anything prior about protagonist Novic, or where his story might go.

What aspect of the book was the most fun to write?

You’d think me odd if I said it was exploring the gruesome ways to die, but demystifying death had a curious pleasure to it. I also really loved writing Novic’s oddest, even a touch erotic in the weirdest way, relationship with Brad—who wanted more than anything to see him die.

If there is one emotion or theme that you would hope that the reader connects with, what would that be?

Light and shade. A darkly confounding sense of awe.
