Audiofuturism: Science Fiction Radio Drama and the Black Fantastic Imagination
A mini-interview with André Carrington
Tell us about your new book?
Audiofuturism examines radio plays based on utopian, speculative, and supernatural works by Black authors. Radio dramas like The War of the Worlds and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy are touchstones in the history of science fiction and popular culture, but the works I’ve studied for this book place African American literature at the center of that tradition.
What aspect of the book was the most fun to write?
Writing the conclusion was really liberating — I felt truly free to say what I think is important about sound, media, and Black culture.
If there is one emotion or theme that you would hope that the reader connects with, what would that be?
I hope the book encourages people to appreciate the place of listening in their lives.
