New Book Spotlight
Mexicans on the Moon
A mini-interview with Pedro Iniguez
Tell us about your new book?
Mexicans on the Moon: Speculative Poetry from a Possible Future, is my debut collection of speculative poetry. It features 50 poems of a future Earth and humanity’s place in the cosmos. Featuring themes of space travel, time travel, racism, immigration, public school shootings, and more.
What aspect of the book was the most fun to write?
I like that each poem in the collection stands on its own, but also, that when read as a whole, it tells a loose story of humanity and its achievements and pitfalls in the near and distant future.
If there is one emotion or theme that you would hope that the reader connects with, what would that be?
There are a few issues I address. One of those being Latinos and their place amongst humanity in the future and among the stars. Science-Fiction has not been kind to Latinos. Not in books, not in movies. Growing up, I never saw many of them represented on screen or in the fiction I read. I didn’t see them making it to the future. I wanted to correct that. I wanted to see Latinos in far-flung futures, exploring the sum of creation. And I hope that in delving into this collection, that point will resonate with readers and we see more representation of Latinos in SF moving forward.
